New Firmware Version 11.08.9 published

As of today we have published a new firmware version 11.08.9. Our firmware continues to be based on OpenWrt, this time on the latest release 28185, which includes a lot of improvements on the wireless drivers, the firmware screens look and feel and cover a lot more modern routers.

So what is new?

-       New routers supported:
We added support for:

  • TP-Link WR740N v1 and v2,
  • TP-Link WR741ND v2,
  • TP-Link WR841N v7,
  • TP-Link WA901ND v2,
  • TP-Link MR 3220v1,
  • TP-Link MR 3420v1,
  • Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300H,
  • Buffalo WZR-HP-G300H,
  • Netgear WNDR3700 v1 and v2,
  • Ubiquti Nanostation M2
  • Ubiquti Nanostation Loco M2
  • Ubiquti Picostation M2
  • Ubiquti Bullet M2
  • Ubiquti RocketM2
  • as well as Mikrotik RB450G

-       Mobile 3G routers:

TP-Link MR 3220v1, TP-Link MR 3420v1 and TP-Link WR1043NDv1 have a USB port which allows the plugging in of 3g dongles. This makes these routers independent of a wired internet connection and gives them a range beyond the coverage of wifi networks. Now everywhere were 3g networks are available your hotspot can roam and supply service to your customers. If a mobile power supply can be ensured mobile hotspots such as on buses and ships can be set up with these models.

-       Improved wireless driver for Ubiquiti products (pre M Series), Fonera routers and Engenius routers:
The new wireless driver is the ath5k open source driver, which replaces the old madwifi  driver. It is not just better maintained but also allows a better management of the router’s power settings.

-       Improved support for Engenius routers:
The reboot issue that prevented a soft reboot of Engenius routers has finally been resolved. Engenius routers now have a daily auto-reboot enabled like any other router.

-       A new look and feel with many modern web 2.0 features enabled in the firmware

-       For Chillifire partners we can now also compile a custom branded firmware on request (if required by your business model and warranted by volume)

The new firmware has not bee published for the older Broadcom supported models such as the Linksys WRT54Gx series; their firmware remains unchanged for the moment. We will publish a new firmware for some of these models shortly but leave the old firmware as the default download option. We will do this because the new OpenWrt firmware versions make use of a new driver. This new driver makes WDS connections much easier than on the old models, but cannot support multiple SSIDs. This will be an interesting addition for those of you who connect routers via WDS on a regular basis, but have no use for the ‘Private_Network’ SSID on the standard Chillifire firmware.

We have also removed support from some older router models, for which we never had any real demand in terms of firmware, but which certainly take effort to maintain.

What’s next?

We are now working on a firmware version for the Ralink chipsets, which is used by D-Link on their newer DIR-300 and DIR-600 models, is used by Engenius on their newer models and also by Netgear and Fonera 2.0n. We will keep you posted.

  1. Martin says:

How do I download this? I go to the ‘Downloads’ section, TP-Link and there’s no sign of TP-Link MR 3420v1……..??

  2. admin says:

Apologies, these new sections were still locked. They have now been release for download.

  3. Daniel says:

I tried to install it on a Ubiquiti picostation m2, but the system says “Bad firmware image”. What is the specific file and where I can find it?

  4. admin says:

That is correct. Ubiquiti has introduced new firmware image checks in their 5.x firmware. However, loading the firmware through TFTP (described in detail in our installation guide) is always successful, the image is not rejected and runs absolutely fine.
We are working on making the file compatible so the upload through the AirOs web GUI will work again.
